Born July 7, 1828, Salem. MA. Suicide July 20, 1871, Auburn, NY. Buried in unmarked grave, State Correctional Cemetery, Auburn, NY. Medal of Honor marker placed in vicinity, in memory of Buffam, July 29, 1995. Wife Elizabeth. Served with John Brown in Kansas before the Civil War. Enlisted Co. H 21st Ohio Infantry Regiment. September 2, 1861, three years at Gilead, Ohio. Mustered September 19, 1861, Findlay, Ohio. Volunteered Andrews Raid, April 7, 1862. Discharged May 24, 1863, to receive Commission as 2nd Lieutenant Co. H 21st Ohio Infantry Regiment. Declared exchanged June 21, 1863. AWOL June 22 - December 12, 1863. Resigned for the good of the service, April 28, 1864, Graysville, GA. Saw action in Andrews Raid. Captured following the Raid; sent to Knoxville, TN, May, 1862 but not tried; exchanged via City Point, VA, March 17, 1863. Awarded Medal of Honor March 25, 1863. |
