Physically frail and tubercular. Came to Atlanta, GA in 1857 from Pennsylvania.

Born April, 1827.

Died of consumption February 10, 1897.

Buried Oakland Cemetery, Atlanta. Inscription on marker rather misleading: “Jeff Cain. The historic engineer of the W&ARR manned the famous General on the thrilling wartime run. It was he who drove the locomotive in the historic chase of the Andrews raders (sic.) May 12, 1862.”

Married Elizabeth Cain (b. 1835; died March 8, 1902. Buried beside her husband).

Engineer on the Western & Atlantic Railroad, running the General on April 12, 1862. Remained with Fuller and Murphy in the chase as far as abandonment of William R. Smith north of Kingston, GA.

Listed with others for the Fuller Medal of 1950.
