Weighed over 200 pounds; 22 years, 7 months, 3 days of age on the day of the Raid. Born Sept. 9, 1839, a few miles east of Salineville, Columbia County, Ohio, to Samuel and Sarah Hunter Campbell. Hanged June 18, 1862, at southeast corner of Fair Street (now Memorial Drive) and South Park Avenue, Atlanta, Ga. Buried temporarily at site of execution. Remains removed to National Cemetery, Chattanooga, Tenn., April 25, 1866, near Ohio Memorial, Section G, Grave No. 11,180. A civilian, visiting friends in 2d Ohio Inf. Regt. Grave marker indicates he was a member of 2d Ohio Inf. Regt. Court-martialed Knoxville, Tenn., General Orders No. 54, 1862, HQ Dept. East Tennessee, CSA. Ineligible for Medal of Honor. |
