Buried February 9, 1886, at Quincy, IL, Woodland Cemetery, Lot No. 182, Block 12. No Medal of Honor marker. Married Sarah F. Higgins on September 10, 1866, Portsmouth, Sciota County, Ohio. She died November 20, 1899. Enrolled Co. A 33rd Ohio Infantry Regiment, August 5, 1861, Portsmouth, Ohio. Mustered August 27, 1861, same unit, three years. Appointed Corporal August 17, 1861. Applied for commission in a colored regiment December 5, 1863, examined and rejected January 23, 1864. No reason specified. Reduced to Private at his request, April 24, 1864. Appointed Sergeant, June 6, 1865, reenlisted as Veteran Volunteer, January 1, 1864. Volunteered for Andrews Raid. Saw action in Andrews Raid. Captured April 13, 1862, near Dalton, GA. Exchanged June 26, 1863. Discharged July 12, 1865, near Louisville, KY. Awarded Medal of Honor, September, 1863. |
