Five feet 9 inches tall, dark complexion, black hair, black eyes; 17 years, 5 months, 3 days of age on day of the Raid. Machinist with Columbus & Indiana Central Railway at Columbus, Ohio shops.

Born November 9, 1844, Fredericksburg, VA, to Reverend Samuel (d. October 4, 1880) and Mary Smith.

Died January 28, 1868, Columbus of pneumonia.

Buried Greenlawn Cemetery, Columbus, January 31, 1868, Section C, Lot No. 84. Medal of Honor marker at grave. (Requested by James G. Bogle.)

Enrolled as James Smith without parents’ knowledge or permission Co. I 2nd Ohio Infantry Regiment, August 15, 1861, Circleville, Ohio. Mustered September 3, 1861, Camp Dennison, Ohio. Volunteered Andrews Raid April 7, 1862. Appointed Corporal, September 25, 1862. Discharged October 10, 1864, Camp Chase, Ohio, expiration of term of service.

Saw action Andrews Raid; Battles of Chickamauga, GA, Chattanooga, TN; Missionary Ridge; in Atlanta, GA campaign.

Enlisted Confederate unit Jasper, TN; came under suspicionby Confederates, jailed in Swims Jail, Chattanooga; escaped.

Awarded Medal of Honor, July 6, 1864.
