Came to Atlanta, GA in 1854. Foreman of Machinery and Motive Power for Western & Atlantic Railroad at time of the Raid. Elected to Atlanta City Council 1866; served three terms. Inaugurated Atlanta Water Works 1866.

Born November 29, 1829, County Wicklow, Ireland, to Thomas and Elizabeth Keyes Murphy, one of eight children. Family emigrated to United States in 1838, settled in Schuylkill County, PA.

Died December 28, 1909; buried Oakland Cemetery, Atlanta.

Married Adelia R. McConnell, 1858 (b. September 11, 1840, Hall County, GA; d. December 13, 1916; buried Oakland Cemetery, Atlanta)

Listed with others for the Fuller Medal of 1950.
