Served as County Surveyor of Catoosa County, GA, ten years.

Gregg, in his pamphlet, states: “At Acworth, White Smith was sent to Allatoona by horse hoping that the engine (General) would be abandoned and he would be able to head them off. Seeing no one, he joined the pursuit at Allatoona.” Apparently Smith’s participation ended at Kingston when the Yonah was given up for the William R. Smith.

O'Neill, in Wild Train, page 417, describing the ceremonies of 1891 at Chattanooga National Cemetery for the Ohio Memorial to the Raiders, states, "This time too Anthony Murphy and White Smith stood with Conductor Fuller as representatives of the the pursuing party of 1862."
