Lived in Arkansas 1870-1883, McComb, Ohio, until 1888, then “roamed” as far west as Yakima, WA before returning to Ohio. Born November 14, 1838, Delaware County, Ohio, to James and Opra Decker Porter.

Last Raider to die, October 15, 1923, 716 Meredith Street, Dayton, Ohio.

Buried Union Cemetery, McComb, Ohio, October 18, 1923. No Medal of Honor marker on grave.

Enlisted Co. A 21st Ohio Infantry Regiment, April 19, 1861, three months. Enlisted Co. G 21st Ohio Infantry Regiment September 2, 1861, McComb, three years. Mustered September 19, 1861, Findlay, Ohio, Co. G 21st Ohio Infantry Regiment, three years. Promoted Sergeant, February 1, 1863; 2nd Lieutenant, July 9, 1863; 1st Lieutenant, January 28, 1865, then commanding Co. I 21st Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Discharged March 31, 1865, Goldsboro, NC.

Saw action at Battle of Ivy Hill, Floyd County, KY, November 8, 1861; in Andrews Raid; at Battle of Chickamauga, GA, September 20, 1863.

Captured after Andrews Raid, April 14, 1862; escaped Fulton County Jail, Atlanta, GA, October 16, 1862. Rejoined Federal lines. Corinth, MS, November 18, 1862. Captured September 20, 1863; escaped near Augusta, GA, June 27, 1864. Wounded on foraging expedition near Bentonville, NC; thrown from a mule, suffering rupture and later a hernia.

Medal of Honor, September, 1863; acknowledged receipt of engraved Medal, August 1, 1864.
