December 25, 1863) and Mary Ruffner Ross. Hanged June 18, 1862, at southeast corner of Fair Street (now Memorial Drive) and South Park Avenue, Atlanta, GA. Buried temporarily at site of execution. Remains removed to the National Cemetery, Chattanooga, TN, April 25, 1866, near Ohio Memorial, Section H, Grave No. 11,179. Medal of Honor marker at grave. Enlisted 2nd Ohio Infantry Regiment, April 15, 1861, three months. QM Sergeant, September 18, 1861; Regiment Sergeant Major, December 7, 1861. Enlisted August 20, 1861, for three years. Mustered August 27, 1861, Camp Dennison, Ohio. Captured. Court-martialed, Knoxville, TN, General Orders No. 54, 1862, HQ Department of East Tennessee, CSA. Saw action at first Battle of Bull Run; in Andrews Raid. Awarded Medal of Honor, September, 1863. |
